Why trees in urban areas?
 Trees literally hold our island state together. They help define
Hawai‘i’s sense of place, that special connection
between our diverse cultures and the environment, the land and
its people. While trees in urban areas may appear to have a different
function than trees in the natural forest, they often are the
first connection that communities have to nature.
Our urban forests also help make communities healthier and more
livable. They:
 Perform a vital role in the urban ecosystem, providing habitat
and food for birds and animals.
Provide jobs for landscape architects, horticulturists, parks & recreation
personnel, arborists, tree-trimmers and other related professions.
Help cool the overall environment by shading asphalt, concrete
and metal surfaces.
Remove impurities from the air and absorb carbon dioxide and
other “greenhouse
gasses.”
Contribute to the economic well being of the state by keeping
our cities and communities beautiful for those who visit our island
paradise.
